George Cartner is the guide in the Dragonfly Room and has been a primary guide for 20 years, with 15 of those at our school. George is much loved for his firm, yet gentle approach to guiding the children in his class. Parents and children alike relate well to his warmth and sense of humor. George values working for The Portland Montessori School because of its rich history and solid reputation for providing children with an excellent Montessori education. He also appreciates that the school allows flexibility in how to apply this method.
George received his BA in social science from Marylhurst College in Portland, where he took numerous courses in therapies such as dance, sand, psycho-drama, solution-focused and art. He received his AMI certification as a primary guide from the Montessori Institute Northwest (MINW). George has volunteered at the Dougy Center for 13 years and with Camp Erin for the last 10 years. Both organizations are dedicated to helping children experience grief in a healthy way.
When not in the classroom, George can be found volunteering within his community, spending time with his children or engaging in a wide variety of pastimes like hiking, skiing and reading.
